You see rags-to-riches stories in the newspapers and you wonder what the key to business success is; how to get it, where to find it. Actually, there is not one key but three to business success and the following few lines will briefly describe each one of them.

The first key is focus. You need to be extremely focused to know what you want to achieve in business and in life. There are people who promise themselves that by this age I will have achieved this much. And they do so. How? They have made up their minds about their goal and from then on this goal will be the foremost thing on their minds. Every decision that they take after the goal fixation will be in terms of achieving this goal. There is no deviation from the focus, once it is determined.

The second key is planning. There is no success, let alone business success, without a plan of action. Once you have found and agreed upon your goal, you will have to back it up with a long-term plan and a short-term plan. The long-term plan has the ultimate result broken up in maybe five or ten years time periods. The short-term plan however will have the long terms plan broken into bite-sized plans, which have to be achieved and monitored over short periods of time, say monthly, three-monthly and six-monthly. These plans are what will determine the business success for an entrepreneur. Without an adequate business plan it will not be possible to translate the dream into reality because the ladder would be missing.

The third key is resources. Resources can be finance, human resources, knowledge, and so on. The ability to build on whatever resources one has to create an adequate base is what makes a business success story come true. It is not possible to start any venture without adequate finance and people to support it. The way to create and use these resources in the beginning will make or break your venture.

A good businessperson, for example, minimizes financial drain by first borrowing from friends and family for capital, which will spare him/her from paying interest. The same stands true for the use of human resources. In order to cut costs to the minimum possible, for the initial phase, you could use the help of your family members in the launching of the business.

If you have these three keys, then in no time you will achieve success in your business.
